| Frequently Asked Questions |
| What Is a Domain Name? |
|
A domain name is a unique tag that identifies you to other computers connected to the Internet. Every domain name represents a set of numbers called an IP address. Your domain name acts as your calling card on the web, since you can choose a name that represents your business, your family name, or anything else that can be remembered easily and associated with you. Having a domain a name enables you to send and receive e-mail with your domain name as the address

| What is a Registrar? |
A Registrar is a company that allows individuals or companies to register a domain name. The customer first requests the domain name. The Registrar then checks with the central registry for the domain to make sure it's available. If the domain name is available, the Registrar will then ask for the required details from the customer and begin to process the order to register that specific domain. All companies offering domain registration services do so via a Registrar that will process the order. |
| |
| What are the naming restrictions ? |
A domain name can have up to 59 characters. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and hyphens ("-"). Spaces, punctuation marks, and other symbols are not allowed. A domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen. |
| |
| How long can I register for ? |
The moment the domain is registered it belongs to you for the duration of the registration. For most domains you can renew this each year. For .co.uk domains, this must be every 2 years. It is important that the renewal is carried out promptly. If you delay, your domain will be frozen after 30 days of expiry. It would then go into a state of redemption and you could end up paying hundreds to get it released. Worse, you may lose it altogether, especially knowing there are company's farming expired domains, who offer them for resale at highly inflated prices. Ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure your domain registration is up to date. |
| |
| When can I use my domain ? |
Once your domain has been registered it can take up to 72 hours or more before your domain name becomes 'active'. The process is called ''propagation' which involves main servers around the world updating their databases with newly registered names.
At this stage your domain name will point towards a server on which the domain is 'parked' - usually the server of the registering agent who registered your domain. If you decide to host your site on a different server, propogation takes place once again so as to 'point' your name to the new server. |
